PLEASE NOTE: All users wanting to utilize Fort Phil Kearny Recreation opportunities (skiing, snowshoeing, etc.) MUST obtain permission in advance.  Please call 684-7629 to access the site.  The process is very easy, but all users are required to have a Permission for Access slip in their possession, PRIOR to site use.

Thanks to The Wyoming Conservation Corps (WCC), in partnership with AmeriCorps and the University of Wyoming, a new trail has been completed at the Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site! A crew of eight workers was on site for ten days in June hand cutting the new trail that launches from the Lower Corral bridge over Lower Piney Creek and heads west up the creek. The trail can be utilized by horseback riders, hikers, bikers, etc. WITH PERMISSION that can obtained at the Fort Phil Kearny Interpretive Center. The trail will be open in the winter months as well for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. For more information, please call the site to speak with the Superintendent at (307) 684-7629 or contact by email at DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

  1. We enjoyed our visit to Wagon Box. It was well laid out and easy to visualize the fight. It is always surprising to see how small the space our pioneers and soldiers had to utilize. Wagon boxes (covered wagons) very small for the items needed and in this case, the area provided by the wagon boxes was very small for so many men. Thank you for a well thought out display.

  2. Just read The Heart of Everything There Is (Red Cloud’s war) and can’t wait for my trip to Fort P Kearny this summer to see it all in person. Those photos above just whet my appetite. No wonder the Sioux-Cheyenne fought so hard to keep this country. Its beautiful.. js
