following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on En-

A BILL

To amend the National Trails System Act to provide for
studies of the Chisholm Trail and Great Western Trail
to determine whether to add the trails to the National
Trails System, and for other purposes.

1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-
2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

3 SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
4 This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Chisholm Trail and
5 Great Western Trail Studies Act’’.

1 SEC. 2. STUDIES OF THE CHISHOLM TRAIL AND GREAT
2 WESTERN TRAIL FOR POTENTIAL ADDITION
3 TO THE NATIONAL TRAILS SYSTEM.
4 Section 5(c) of the National Trails System Act (16

5 U.S.C. 1244(c)) is amended by adding at the end the fol-
6 lowing:

7 ‘‘(44) CHISHOLM TRAIL.—
8 ‘‘(A) IN GENERAL.—The Chisholm Trail

9 (also known as the ‘Abilene Trail’), from the vi-
10 cinity of San Antonio, Texas, segments from

11 the vicinity of Cuero, Texas, to Ft. Worth,
12 Texas, Duncan, Oklahoma, alternate segments
13 used through Oklahoma, to Enid, Oklahoma,
14 Caldwell, Kansas, Wichita, Kansas, Abilene,
15 Kansas, and commonly used segments running
16 to alternative Kansas destinations.
17 ‘‘(B) REQUIREMENT.—In conducting the

18 study required under this paragraph, the Sec-
19 retary of the Interior shall identify the point at

20 which the trail originated south of San Antonio,
21 Texas.
22 ‘‘(45) GREAT WESTERN TRAIL.—
23 ‘‘(A) IN GENERAL.—The Great Western
24 Trail (also known as the ‘Dodge City Trail’),

25 from the vicinity of San Antonio, Texas, north-
26 by-northwest through the vicinities of Kerrville

1 and Menard, Texas, north-by-northeast through
2 the vicinities of Coleman and Albany, Texas,
3 north through the vicinity of Vernon, Texas, to
4 Doan’s Crossing, Texas, northward through or
5 near the vicinities of Altus, Lone Wolf, Canute,

6 Vici, and May, Oklahoma, north through Kan-
7 sas to Dodge City, and north through Nebraska

8 to Ogallala.
9 ‘‘(B) REQUIREMENT.—In conducting the

10 study required under this paragraph, the Sec-
11 retary of the Interior shall identify the point at

12 which the trail originated south of San Antonio,
13 Texas.’’.
14 SEC. 3. ACQUISITION OF LAND.
15 No land or interest in land outside the exterior

16 boundaries of any federally administered area may be ac-
17 quired by the Federal Government for the Chisholm Trail

18 or Great Western Trail without the consent of the owner
19 of the land or interest.

potential addition to the National Trails System, and for other purposes.

13 used through Oklahoma, to Enid, Oklahoma;
14 Caldwell, Kansas; Wichita, Kansas; Abilene, Kansas;

15 and the segments running to alternative Kansas des-
16 tinations that were commonly used.’’.

17 SEC. 3. DESIGNATION OF THE GREAT WESTERN TRAIL FOR
18 STUDY AND POTENTIAL ADDITION TO THE
19 NATIONAL TRAILS SYSTEM.

21 U.S.C. 12441(c)) is amended by adding at the end the
22 following new paragraph:

23 ‘‘(ll) The Great Western Trail National His-
24 toric Trail (also known as the ‘Dodge City Trail’),

25 from the vicinity of San Antonio, Texas, north-by-
26 northwest through the vicinities of Kerrville and

8 SEC. 4. REPORTS TO CONGRESS.
9 Section 5(c) of the National Trails System Act (16
10 U.S.C. 12441(c)) is amended by striking ‘‘of this section:’’
11 in the first sentence and inserting the following: ‘‘of this
12 section. Not later than 3 complete fiscal years after the
13 date of the enactment of an Act requiring a new study

14 under this section, the Secretary of the Interior shall sub-
15 mit to Congress the newly required study.’’.

16 SEC. 5. LAND ACQUISITION.
17 No lands or interests therein outside the exterior

18 boundaries of any federally administered area may be ac-
19 quired by the Federal Government for the Chisholm Trail

20 or Great Western Trail except with the consent of the
21 owner thereof.
